What else does qathet Living do?

qathet Living lives beyond the pages of the magazine it publishes month. As a member of the community, we support many non-profits and worthwhile causes including the Powell River Action Centre Food Bank, Powell River Christmas Cheer, Powell River Women in Business and the Powell River Chamber of Commerce.

In addition, we also provide an annual $500 scholarship to School District 47 students graduating from Brooks Secondary School who are pursuing post-secondary studies in either journalism, graphic design or marketing. We began doing this in 2018 and we’re excited that we can support students as they work towards their educational and career goals. For details or to apply, see a counsellor at Brooks.

qathet Living also sponsors two separate contests that support and spark imagination and creativity within our community. They are The Quickie writing contest and Powtown Pumpkin People.

The Quickie, launched in 2019 in partnership with the Powell River Public Library, provides qathet writers with the opportunity to participate in a three-hour writing contest. The majority of writers attended the contest in person the first year but some participated online. By year two, it was 50/50 and of course in 2021, it will be entirely online. This contest takes place in February and entries have the opportunity to win great prizes and have their writing critiqued by professional writers. Winning entries are also published in the magazine. The theme of the contest is announced at 1 pm on the day of the contest on Powell River Living’s and the Powell River Library’s Facebook pages. The theme is also available by signing up for an email notification in advance at contest@prliving.ca or by calling Powell River Living Publisher Isabelle Southcott. For more information on The Quickie, take a look at the January or February issue of qathet Living.

Powtown Pumpkin People was created in 2019 to provide the community with atourism related event that could be enjoyed  by the entire family. Using the Kentville, Nova Scotia pumpkin people festival as our inspiration, qathet’s festival boasted more than 40 entries in its second year alone!  This year, organizers are predicting even more growth as the idea of creating unique pumpkin people standing guard at business entrances and welcoming guests at homes across the region continues to gain momentum. When we first planned this event, we had no idea that Powtown Pumpkin People would be the perfect event to hold during a pandemic. For more information on Powtown Pumpkin People, look at the October issue of qathet Living.
