Musical theatre kudos

Congratulations to all Powell River participants selected to compete at this year's Performing Arts BC in Duncan BC the week of May 24.

Tyana Sacree won first place in junior musical theatre for Wouldn't It Be Lovely from My Fair Lady and My New Philosophy from You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown. Tyana is 11 years old and was competing against 18 of the province's best in the category for those 14 and under.

Madeleine Hocking also attracted the adjudicators' attention with her violin music and was awarded an honourable mention. The Klengel Trio, made up of Madeleine Hocking and Josiah and Eli Schweitzer won honourable mention in the chamber music category.

Paddle kudos

Paddle kudosCongratulations to the Coast Mountain Academy for being the lucky recipient of the major cost of eight Stand Up Paddle Boards. Stand Up Paddling (SUP) is a developing sport that has its roots in Polynesian culture. The Coast Mountain Academy is the first class in Canada to offer SUP as part of their program.

The new SUP Boards will be used at the academy's Eco-Edventure Camps for Grade 7 students as a way to introduce students to nature through various modalities of travel. They will also be used at student-led clinics throughout the summer. For more information email outdoors@sd47.bc.ca.

Art kudos

Congratulations to nine-year-old Maria Hooff for following her dream of being an artist and launching her career at a young age.

Maria paints pictures and sells them at the Open Air Market. "I've been selling my drawings at the market for a while," Maria told Powell River Living Magazine. "In three days I made $54!"

Fundraising kudos

Kudos to Stephen Gration, for raising the most money for charities supported by Canada Safeway Stores. Stephen, along with another checker from a Vancouver Island store, was invited to attend a gala dinner in Victoria on March 31 where they were presented with awards. They raised the most money out of all the Safeway stores on Vancouver Island and Powell River. The charities that benefitted are: Breast Cancer, Muscular Dystrophy, Prostate Cancer and Easter Seals.

Letters

Dear PR Living:

I have no idea why it took me until now to read your May issue with articles about "Pets & Their People." As I have told you before, I really love all issues of Powell River Living, and never miss reading any of them. All of your contributors are wonderful writers, as are you! But being an SPCA person I really, really enjoyed this one! Continue on! Thank you.

Sharie Hutton
